Our loving mother, Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Jewell (Donovan), 81, of Powhatan (formerly of Plymouth and Cohasset, Massachusetts), passed away on January 5th after a short illness at St. Mary’s Hospital surrounded by her loved ones. Betty was formerly a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and selflessly traded that career for motherhood. Betty was always the most giving and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. When she was not planting, weeding her garden, or knitting, she was taking the joy in finding the perfect gift for those she loved, or spending time with her family.
Betty was the devoted wife of Robert Allen Jewell Sr. for 59 years. She was the beloved mother of her daughter and son in law Shannon and David Moffatt, her daughter and son in law Melissa and Shawn Corker, son and daughter in law, Adam and Kristi Jewell. She was a devoted grandmother to Riley Moffatt, Jackson Moffatt, Gabriel Corker, Mackenzie Corker, Greysen Jewell, Lyla Jewell, and Lynden Jewell. She was the loving sister of William Donovan. Betty was predeceased by her parents Robert and Alexandira Donovan, her son Robert Allen Jewell Jr., and her sister Barbara Donovan, and her brother Robert Donovan.
Betty passed through life’s trials with courage, grace, compassion, and the sarcasm that can only come from being born and raised in Massachusetts before moving to Virginia in 2005. She was truly loved by her family and dear friends. There will be a family graveside service held privately.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to:

We little knew that morning that
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you so dearly,
In death we do the same.
It broke our hearts o lose you,
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you.
The day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories.
Your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you
You are always by your side.
Our family chain is broken
and nothing seems the same,
but as God calls us one by one
the chain will link again.
2 Corinthians 4:14-5:1
We fix our sights not on what is seen but what is unseen, an eternal dwelling to come.
