Born on July 7, 1937, in Albemarle, North Carolina, Jan was the eldest daughter of Cletus and Blye Lowder. She was soon joined by her sister, Marlene, and the family later relocated to Newport News, Virginia during World War II. Jan graduated from Glen Burnie High School in Maryland, where she met the love of her life, John “Bud” Sparhawk.

A dedicated educator, Jan spent nearly 25 years teaching students from elementary through high school. She later served as Director of Non-Profit Childcare Foundation, continuing her lifelong commitment to the development and care of children.
As the spouse of an Air Force officer, Jan embraced life abroad, living in France, England, and Okinawa. She developed a deep appreciation for travel and culture, visiting countries across Asia and Europe, including Burma, Thailand, Taiwan, China, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and beyond.
Jan and Bud eventually made their home in Annapolis, Maryland, where they lived for many years before relocating to Brandermill Woods in their later life.
