October 13, 1942 – January 9, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our mother, Barbara Bennett (Leonard) Brown, on January 9, 2025, at her home. Born in Fitchburg, MA, Barbara grew up in the historic Fan district of Richmond, VA, where she spent her childhood with her three sisters and her loving parents. She dedicated her life to raising her eight children and was happiest when her home was filled with the love, energy, and laughter of family.
As a grandmother, Barbara was lovingly known as "Yang Yang," a name given to her by her first grandchild, Kaitlyn, that soon became a term of endearment for all her grandchildren. She treasured these bonds and embraced the role of a devoted and loving grandmother, always creating lasting memories for her family.
Barbara was known for her fierce competitive spirit. Whether it was playing board games or cards, or doing any kind of puzzle, she was always in it to win it, bringing joy and a little friendly rivalry to every game. These moments will be fondly remembered by all who shared them with her.
A lover of the beach, Barbara spent several years living just a few blocks from the shore, where her grandchildren spent countless summer weekends. The trips to the ice cream shop on the golf cart and the walks to the boardwalk to enjoy the music were highlights of these cherished times by the sea.
Barbara’s sweet tooth was without a doubt inherited — ice cream and bread pudding were among her favorites, and her love of these simple pleasures was something she shared with her family whenever possible.
Barbara found joy in the presence of her family and friends, and her memory will live on in the love, laughter, and support that she so generously gave. She may no longer be with us, but her wish for peace, kindness, and connection will remain in our hearts.
Barbara was baptized in 1972 as a Jehovah’s Witness and her faith and belief in the resurrection promised to us in the Bible at John 5:28 & 29 was something that gave her hope as she endured through countless health issues over the last several years.
Barbara is survived by her eight children, Lisa Simmons (Bruce), Michael Leonard (Shari), Dianna Lester (Larry), Amanda Pitman (Jeff), Paula Shredl (Kevin), Jason Leonard (Kelly), Joseph B. Leonard (Tina), David Leonard (Heather) 18 grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Stephanie (Tyler), Tanner (Hannah), Logan (Zofia), Jake (Madison), Avery (Sydney), Mitchell (Brittany),
Regan, Aden, Ethan, Griffin, Morgan, Mason, Madilynn, Jonathan and Arleigh and her first great-grandchild is on the way, as well a dear friend, Denise, and many other special friends, and extended family. She was predeceased by her parents, Ralph and Harriett Bennett and her sisters, Nancy, Joan and Connie.
A memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at 2:00 pm at the Inn at Blackstone, 707 4th Street, Blackstone, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Children’s Home Society of Virginia, in her memory.
Though she will be deeply missed, we take comfort in knowing that she is only asleep in death and was looking forward to the resurrection in the future here on earth. Her legacy of love, warmth, and togetherness will continue to guide and inspire us all.
